Biography

Pavel Shtiglits was the youngest of three brothers winning medals at Russian Championships. In individual events, he took silver in the high hurdles in 1911 and bronze in the pole vault in 1913. With his club team he also won the championships in the 4x100 metres relay in 1911 and 1913. In an international open competition in St. Petersburg in 1911, he was the only victor from the host town, winning the 400 m. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Shtiglits took part in the 100 m but did not advance to the second round. He also excelled in football as player of the team “Rossiya” in the St. Petersburg (Petrograd) championships in 1913 and 1914.

In World War II, Shtiglits took part in the defence of Leningrad as a member of a battalion with mine-detection dogs. He was later awarded the “Medal of Merit” for his services.
