Andrejs Kapmals

Of Latvian descent, Andrejs Kapmals took up distance running at the beginning of the 1910s and was selected to represent the Russian Empire in the marathon at the 1912 Stockholm Games. There, he failed to complete the race. Two years later, he won his only national championship in that event by defeating his compatriot and fellow Olympian Aleksandrs Upmals. He also competed in the 5000 metres, setting a personal best of 17:07.0 in 1913, as well as in race walking. He encouraged his friend Alfrēds Ruks to take up the latter sport, in which Ruks would compete at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Kapmals died in 1994, at the age of 104.
