Biography

As Baltic provincial champion in the 1,500 metres, Rūdolfs Vītols was selected to compete in the 1912 Olympic Games. There, he did not finish his heat.

Until World War I, he worked as a technician in the Russian-Baltic wagon factory. After Latvia’s independence he was involved in the construction of the country’s first sports aircraft in 1924, named “Sprīdītis”. Eventually, he worked in a military arsenal. After the Russian invasion in 1941 he was deported to the Usollag labour camp near Surmog in the Russian Solikamsk region, where he died in the following year.
