Individually Shmonina won a 400 silver and gold at the 1989 and 1990 European Indoor Championships, respectively, and was seventh at the 1990 Europeans and Goodwill Games. Shmonina initially placed first with the Russian 4x400 relay at the 1993 World Indoors, but the Russian team was disqualified after Shmonina tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol and received a four-year competitive ban, which also ended her sports career. Shmonina later worked as a children’s coach in Fryazino, Moskva Oblast.
