Yelena Zhupiyeva (later Vyazova) took up athletics in 1972 and was selected for the Soviet national team in 1986. She won a 10K silver at the 1987 World Championships, adding bronze at the 1988 Olympics. She also competed at the 1986 European Championships, where she was sixth in both the 3K and 10K and at the 1992 Olympics, where she was eliminated in the 10K heats. Zhupiyeva also won the 10 miles at the 1993 Bern Grand Prix. Zhupiyeva won the CIS 10K title in 1992, and the Ukrainian 5K title in 1996 and 10K titles in 1993 and 1996.
