Biography
Lev Kalyayev was on the Soviet national team from 1949-55. He won an Olympic silver with the 4x100 relay in 1952 and was the European 4x100 relay champion in 1950. Kalyayev also won Soviet 4x100 relay titles in 1952-53. Kalyayev graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics (now Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics) in 1953 and later worked with the Leningrad Optical Mechanical Association (LOMO), the leading Soviet manufacturer of advanced optical instruments, medical equipment and cameras; and with the Research Institute Morfizpribor, the leading Soviet center for research, development and creation of hydroacoustic equipment.
