A Minneapolis native, Karl Anderson attended the University of Minnesota for college and later medical school. He captained the track team in 1920. He was a hurdler who won the AAU 110 hurdles both indoors and outdoors in 1923. He was AAU runner-up in both the 110 and the 220 hurdles in 1922. He practiced medicine in Minneapolis throughout his life.
