A native of Fort Madison, Iowa, John Atlee attended Shattuck Military Academy, Lawrence Prep School, and then Princeton where he captained the track team in 1908. He returned to Fort Madison where he ran the family business, S. & J. C. Atlee, which had started as a lumber business, but later diversified into real estate holdings. Atlee also served as President of the Lee County Savings Bank. He spent much of his free time duck hunting.
