Greg Bell

As a freshman at Indiana University, Greg Bell won the 1955 AAU long jump. The following year he jumped 26-6½ (8.09), a mark which to then had been bettered only by Jesse Owens. Bell then went on to again win the AAU title (outdoors) in 1959, the Olympic title in 1956, the NCAA long jump in 1956 and 1957, and the AAU indoors in 1958. In the 1959 Pan American Games long jump Bell won a silver medal. He was also a three-time champion at the Penn Relays. He competed at the 1960 US Olympic Trials, finishing fourth, and then retired.

Bell later attended dental school at Indiana University and became a dentist. He practiced until he was 89-years-old serving as director of dentistry at Logansport State Hospital. In July 2024 Bell has a street named for him, Dr Greg Bell Way in his hometown of Logansport, Indiana. He is a member of the Indiana Sports Hall of Fame, the Indiana University Sports Hall of Fame, the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame, the Indiana Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame, and the Penn Relays Carnival Hall of Fame.
