Chet Bowman’s finest year in track was 1928 when, in addition to his Olympic appearance, he equaled the world record of 9.6, and with his Newark AC team, ran on a world-record setting 4x110 yard relay team. In 1927 Bowman won the AAU 100 yards. Bowman was also AAU indoor 60 yard champion in 1926 and 1930. He won the 100 at the 1924 Penn Relays and was second in the 100 at the IC4As in 1925. Bowman ran for Syracuse University, where he was a star running back in football, and it was rumored that his college coach illegally widened the football field to take advantage of his speed.
Bowman later worked in real estate, as one of the founding members of the Bowman & Axelsen real estate firm in Sea Bright, New Jersey. He also served as a vice-president of the First National Bank of Sea Bright, but Bowman died at only age 34 from a heart attack.
Personal Bests: 100y – 9.6 (1927); 100 – 10.6 (1924).
