Bill Chisholm was AAU 15 km. walk champion and competed in the 1932 50 km. walk event, finishing 9th. Chisholm started in track at Poly High School in Los Angeles. After high school he entered the first Los Angeles Marathon, and when he became tired he started walking but still passed many runners, which led him to become a race walker, encouraged by Southern Cal coach Dean Cromwell, who had seen him passing the runners.
Chisholm’s sports career was cut short by a back injury. He later worked in automobile sales, but also started a speaking career, which he called the Chisholm Trail, in which he told stories of his sports career and the Olympics and helped raised money for USA Olympic athletes. He also became an international race walking judge.
Personal Best: 50 km. Walk – 5-16:39 (1932).
