Five times between 1966 and 1972, Leon Coleman placed in the top six at the AAU Championship in the high hurdles, and in 1969, he tied Willie Davenport for first place. Coleman attended Winston-Salem State College, graduating in 1972. He also ran for the Southern California Striders and the Philly Pioneer Club. Coleman later became a track coach in North Carolina.
