In the semi-final, Erv Hall (USA) ran 13.38, the fastest auto-time ever. Willie Davenport won the second semi in 13.53. Davenport ran almost a perfect race in the final, taking the lead early, and defeating Hall by a full metre. Italy’s Eddy Ottoz broke up the American medal sweep by winning the bronze medal. In 1969, both Hall and Davenport equaled the hand-timed world record of 13.2, although at different meets.
