John Gray was a distance runner for the Enterprise CYO, which he helped found and coach, and the Philadelphia YMCA. He was third in the AAU 10K in both 1923 and 1925 and finished fourth in 1924. At the 1924 Olympic Trials, he placed second in the 10K. At the time of his death in 1942, following a nine-week battle with pneumonia, he was a foreman with Collins & Aikman, an automotive manufacturing company. He also coached with the Shanahan Athletic Club.
