Run on one of the hottest days in Parisian history, with temperatures described as over 40° C. (103° F.), the event turned into a survival test. Only 15 of the 38 starters could finish the race, as many of the runners were overcome by heatstroke. Paavo Nurmi and Ville Ritola took the early lead, but Ritola could not stay with Nurmi, who won by almost 1½ minutes. Ritola was another minute clear of the third-place finisher, Earl Johnson of the USA.
