Like Max Emmerich, the winner of the triathlon, John Grieb also competed in the all-around championship in track & field. After four events he was placed last with 2,199 points, but he then had no mark in the hammer throw and the pole vault and withdrew from the competition. Grieb represented the Philadelphia Turngemeinde in 1904. In later life, Grieb owned a delicatessen store in Philadelphia.
