Before starting college, Lam Jones had placed fourth in the 100m at the 1976 Final Trials, but was nominated for the individual event in Montréal when Houston McTear withdrew because of injury In the Olympic 100 m, Jones finished sixth, but won a gold medal in the relay after running an outstanding second leg. Jones never won a major title, his best finish being second in the 1977 NCAA 100 m.
