After graduating from Wisconsin in 1917, Arlie Schardt served with the army in France as a lieutenant and placed second in the mile at the 1919 American Expeditionary Forces championships. The following year he returned to Europe as a member of the Olympic team and, finishing in third place, was the second scoring member of the team that took the gold medals in the 3,000m team event by a handsome margin. Arlie Schardt later coached at the South Division High School in his native Milwaukee.
