Jean Sauthier was the son of François Sauthier and Marie Sick. His father was an active sportsman in Genève, mainly in gymnastics and wrestling. In 1910, François Sauthier founded the Salle Sauthier in Genève, where he would train his two sons, Jean and Louis in boxing. Active in boxing throughout the 1920s along with his older brother Louis Sauthier, Jean Sauthier won the Swiss featherweight championship in 1924 and 1926. A member of the Swiss boxing delegation at the Paris 1924 Olympics, Sauthier lost his only match by decision to Bruno Petrarca of Italy.
He later became a well-known boxing trainer and physical education instructor at the academy his father founded, notably training European champion Maurice Dubois in the 1930s.
