Christa Kinshofer was a figure skater in her very early years. She then started her Alpine career in 1971, with her best year coming in 1979, when she was World Cup champion in giant slalom, with four race wins that year, for which she was elected German Sportswoman of the Year. In 1979, she won the giant slalom World Cup.
After her Olympic slalom silver medal in 1980 and the slalom silver medal at the World Championships in the same year, Kinshofer-Güthlein had some problems with the Deutscher Skiverband (DSV), and raced briefly for the Netherlands before returning to the West German ski team for the 1988 Winter Olympics, where she won two further medals, silver in the giant slalom and bronze in the slalom. She then retired from competition. In total, she won seven World Cup races, five in the giant slalom, and one each in the slalom and the Alpine combination. For her first Olympic medal she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
Kinshofer-Güthlein later wrote a fitness book Fit for Success, became a prominent speaker, and organized golf tournaments and ski events. In November 2012 she began managing a ski clinic within the ATOS Clinic together with her second husband Erich Rembeck at München, who was one the world’s most renowned specialists for knee surgery and a long-time personal physician known to many prominent sportspeople.
