The men’s Olympic giant slalom had been contested over two runs since 1968, but the women had only a single run until 1980, when they converted to the two-run format. The World Cup leader all year had been Liechtenstein’s Hanni Wenzel, and she confirmed her form when she led the first run over Germany’s Irene Epple, who was a solid World Cup skier, but was best known at the time as Sebastian Coe’s girlfriend. The second run was won by France’s Perrine Pelen, which moved her up to the bronze medal position, after she had been sixth on the first run. Wenzel was third and Epple fourth in the second effort, and they held their overall positions, Wenzel winning Liechtenstein’s first Olympic gold medal. The eighth-place finisher was Maria Epple, Irene’s sister, and the 1978 World Champion in this event. Wenzel was a top World Cup skier for several years, but 1980 was her best one, winning the overall, giant slalom, and combined World Cup titles.
