Walter Barfuß was a member of the West German four-man bob together with Peter Hell, Hans Wagner and Heinz Busche at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games, finishing seventh. He won two bronze medals at the Worlds (1977 four-man, 1978 two-man). He was affiliated with TSV 1860 Rosenheim. By profession, Barfuß was a postal clerk.
