Jim Bickford competed in four Olympic Winter Games – 1936, 1948, 1952 and 1956. In addition to his bobsled titles, he was honored for his contributions to American winter sports by being chosen to carry the United States flag at the opening ceremonies in both 1952 and 1956. Bickford had a long career, winning his first big title in 1934 when he slid on the North American 4-man champions. His last national championship came in 1954 when he and Stan Benham took the AAU 2-man. He lived near Lake Placid his entire life and worked for many years as a forest ranger.
