East German bobsledder Karsten Brannasch won a four-man gold medal in 1994 with pilot Harald Czudaj, Olaf Hampel and brakeman Alexander Szelig. For the former GDR he also won a silver medal at the 1990 World Championships. Later for the reunified German team Brannasch collected a bronze medal at the 1995 World Championships in the four-man event.
