West German former sprinter Olaf Hampel turned to bobsledding in the late 1980s. In 1988 he placed 14th with the West German four-man bob and after German reunification claimed two gold medals with pilots Harald Czudaj in 1994 and Christoph Langen in 1998. Beside these victories he was also World Champion 1995 in the two-man and 1996 in the four-man. In 1996 he also won in both bob events at the European Championships. Hampel was educated as a mechanical engineer.
