Born in the Polish town of Brzeg in September 1948, Gennady Dobrokhoto took up boxing in the late 1960s where he competed in tournaments in the Soviet Union. As a featherweight Dobrokhoto fought in the 1969 USSR Championships but lost in the early stages of the competition to the Soviet Olympic champion Valerian Sokolov. He continued to compete, this time as a lightweight, and won silver at the Summer Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR in 1971. Good performances throughout the year earned Dobrokhoto a place on the Soviet Olympic team for the 1972 München Games, but he lost his opening fight to Norway’s Svein Erik Paulsen after the referee stopped the contest in the first round. Following the Olympics he remained a member of the Soviet national boxing team and fought at major international tournaments. As a welterweight, he won the Vaclav Prochazka tournament in Czechoslovakia in 1973. After his in-ring career Dobrokhoto became a successful coach at the sports school of the Moskva Sports Committee.
