Naoko Sawamatsu

Naoko Sawamatsu was a Japanese professional tennis player who achieved a career-best singles ranking of #14 in the world in February 1995, and a doubles ranking of #98 in the world in January 1995. Sawamatsu won two gold medals at the Asian Games.

Sawamatsu won two ITF singles titles during her career, the first in October 1989 in Nagasaki, Japan, and the second in March 1990 in Moulins, France. Between April 1990 and April 1997 she also won four singles titles on the WTA circuit.

Sawamatsu competed in the singles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She lost in the first round in Barcelona to Anke Huber and lost in the second round in Atlanta to the eventual gold medallist Lindsay Davenport. Sawamatsu’s best Grand Slam performance was when she reached the singles quarter-finals at the 1995 Australian Open where she lost in straight sets to Arantxa Sánchez Vicario.
