Canadian-born ice hockey goalie Karl Friesen moved to West Germany in 1980. He then played with DJK SB Rosenheim until 1985, helping them to win the national championship in 1982 and 1985. He then returned to America for one season, before re-joining Rosenheim, and going on to win his third national title in 1989. In 1992 Friesen moved to EC Hedos München, winning his fourth national title in 1994. He returned to Rosenheim the following year. In 1982 and 1989 Friesen was named Player of the Year. Later he embarked on a coaching career.
With the West German national team, Friesen played at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics, finishing fifth, fifth and sixth, respectively. He was also on the World Championships squads of 1981-83, 1985, 1987 and 1989. In total, he won 113 international caps.
