Biography

During the 1930s Eduards Gešels was one of the best figure skaters in Latvia, winning nine national titles in the pairs competition (1931, 1933–40). In 1934 Gešels and his future wife Hildegarde Švarce finished ninth in the pairs at the European Championships, before finishing 17th in the same event at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics. When World War II broke out the pair moved to Germany, where they were married in 1942. Sadly Švarce was killed during an air raid on the city of Heilbronn in 1944, with Gešels surviving the war and living in Germany until his death in 1975.
