Grau fell 1932 together with Albert Brehme in Lake Placid training for the Olympic Games down 20 metres deep and was hurt severly and could not start at the Olympics. Even the Mayor of New York Jimmy Walker visited him in the hospital. Four years later both claimed the sixth place. Grau became German Champion 1929 and 1934 with Brehme in the two-man bob, 1929 in the four-man bob, third at the World Championships 1930 in the four-man and 1933 in the two-man bob.
