Former East German long and triple jumper René Hannemann turned to bobsledding at the end of the 1980s. He won a silver medal at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics and a bronze medal at Lillehammer in 1994, both with pilot Wolfgang Hoppe but with different teams in the four-man bob. At the World Championships Hannemann won a bronze medal in the four-man in 1991 and a bronze medal in the two-man in 1993, adding championships in the four-man in 1995 and 1997.
At the European Championships he claimed the title in 1995 with a silver one year later. In 1988 he had already won a silver medal in the European four-man with non-Olympian pilot Volker Dietrich. Hannemann was educated as a sports teacher and later worked as an insurance agent in his hometown of Potsdam.
