A native Beantowner, Steve Heinze played for Boston College, where he was a first-team All-American in 1990-91, and was the second-round pick of the Boston Bruins in the 1988 NHL entry draft. Heinze played for the Bruins from 1991-2000, and then played four more years in the NHL, playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Buffalo Sabres, and Los Angeles Kings. He appeared in 694 NHL games, scoring 178 goals and 336 points. Internationally Heinze skated for the US at the 1992 Winter Olympics, the 1989 World Junior Championships, and the 2000 World Championships. He finished his professional hockey career with a few games in the American Hockey League in 2003 with the Manchester Monarchs. Because of his last name, Heinze always wanted to wear #57, in honor of Heinz 57. The Bruins denied this and he wore #23 with them, but he later wore #57 in the NHL.
