Bill Hickey grew up near Lake Placid, attending Keene Central High School, where he started sliding for the Lake Placid Bobsled Club. In 1963 Hickey won the US Championship driving in both the 2-man and 4-man, and he repeated that in 1967. At the 1963 World Championships he had his best international finish, placing fourth in the 4-man. Hickey later became vice-president of the National Bobsled Association.
