Shuzo Matsuoka

Shuzo Matsuoka was a Japanese tennis player who played professionally from 1986 to 1998. Matsuoka achieved a career-best singles ranking of 46 in the world in July 1992, and a doubles ranking of 95 in the world in January 1989. Following his playing career he became a successful sports commentator.

Matsuoka only won one singles and one doubles title during his career. His doubles victory came at the 1989 Auckland Open when he partnered Steve Guy of New Zealand to beat the American pair of John Letts and Bruce Man-Son-Hing. His solitary singles title came at the 1992 Seoul Open when he beat Australian Todd Woodbridge. His best Grand Slam performance came in the singles at the 1995 Wimbledon tournament when he reached the quarter-finals.

Matsuoka competed in the singles at three consecutive Olympic Games; 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona, and 1996 Atlanta, but he never progressed past the first round. He also competed in the doubles in Seoul with partner Toshihisa Tsuchihashi, again being eliminated in the first round. After his retirement Matsuoka became a sports commentator on television in Japan. He also hosted a weekly cookery show and created an online series of motivational videos.
