Herbert, brother of Martin Hohenberger, was an ice hockey defence playing at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics representing Austria. The team was eliminated in the group stage in 1994 and finally placed 12th and last, after losing the match for 11th place to Norway 3-1. Four years later at Nagano the team again placed last, and 14th. Hohenberger won 158 Austria international caps and scored 73 points (22+51), becoming the highest scoring Austrian defencemen.
A hard player, Hohenberger collected almost 2,500 penalty minutes in his career. He played in the AHL and IHL and was part of a couple of NHL training camps before returning to Austria at the age of 22.
During his career, Hohenberger became German champion in 1995 with Kölner Haie and was five-times Austrian league champion with Villacher SV (1992-93, 1999, 2002, 2006). He played with Villacher SV, HC Innsbruck (Austria), Olympiques de Hull, Fredericton Canadiens, and Peoria Rivermen (Canada), Kölner Haie, and Augsburger EV (Germany). Hohenberger later turned to coaching with lower league German and Austrian clubs.
