Tom Coman went to college at Waterford IT and the University of Limerick. He played hurling with Thurles CBS and hurling and Gaelic football with Moycarkey-Borris GAA Club, and competed in athletics at school and with Coolcroo AC. Coman competed at the 2000 Olympics, as well as the 2001 World Championships. He won four Irish 400 metre titles (2000-01, 2004-05) and one Scottish indoor 400 m title (2002). Internationally he also represented Ireland at the 1998 World Junior Championships, the 1999 World Student Games, the 2001 European U23 Championships, and the 2002 European Indoors.
