Dieter, Jr., son of Dieter Kalt, Sr., played ice hockey as a right wing with the Austrian team at the 1994 Lillehammer, 1998 Nagano, and 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The team was eliminated in the group stage and finally placed 12th and last, after losing the match for 11th place to Norway 3-1 in 1994. Four years later at Nagano the team again placed last and 14th, and then at Salt Lake City came 12th out of 14. Kalt Jr. won 117 international caps and scored 58 points (31+27).

Kalt Jr., was an excellent skater who played with a lot of intensity and a charismatic person who brought a good atmosphere into a team. He played at club level in Austria with EC Klagenfurter AC, Wien (Vienna) Capitals, and EC Red Bull Salzburg, and in Germany with Adler Mannheim and Kölner Haie. He also played in the North American pro league (IHL) with Long Beach Ice Dogs, and in Sweden with Färjestad BK and Luleå HF.

During his career Kalt jr. became German champion with Adler Mannheim in 1997 and 1998, Swedish champion in his first season with Färjestad BK in 2002, and five-time Austrian champion with EC Klagenfurter AC (1991, 2000), Wiener (Vienna) Capitals (2005), and EC Red Bull Salzburg (2007-08).

Kalt Jr., announced his retirement as a player in 2012 and went on to become an assistant coach, head coach, and team manager for the Austrian national teams at different levels (U-20 and seniors). He later became director of hockey operations with Klagenfurter AC.
