Günter, brother of Helmut Koren was an Austrian ice hockey right wing and member of the Olympic national team at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The team was eliminated in the group stage and finished ninth. Koren won 41 international caps and scored 14 goals and 12 assists.
Domestically, Koren played with Klagenfurter AC until 1994. He later worked for the municipality of Klagenfurt in the department of measurement and geoinformation for construction planning.
