Biography

Growing up and living most of his life in Zermatt, Alfred Kronig was adept in many winter sports, notably biathlon, in which he won several medals at the national level. It was in cross-country skiing, however, that he twice represented Switzerland at the Winter Olympics. In 1952 in Oslo, he placed 30th in the 18 kilometers and ninth in the 4x10 kilometers relay with Fritz Kocher, Walter Lötscher, and Alfons Supersaxo. In 1956 in Cortina d’Ampezzo he finished 24th in the 50 kilometers. A “Strahler” or “crystal gatherer” in his youth, in his adult years Kronig ran a retail business for gemstones and minerals in his hometown.
