Biography

Arthur Eilers was a noted sports administrator who held several high profile roles in the St. Louis area in the 1940s and 1950s. Eilers served as the commissioner and executive secretary at the Missouri Valley Conference. He was also a swimming and tennis coach at Washington University in St. Louis where he coached the university to five consecutive MVIAA swimming titles. In his youth he was a good all-round athlete who competed in a variety of track and field events. At the 1904 St. Louis Olympics dozens of handicap non-medal track and field events were contested alongside the “true” Olympic events. Eilers competed in four of these, billed as elementary school championships for boys, where he won the 100 yards, high jump, long jump, and shot put.
