Jiří Lála played from 1976-89 in the Czechoslovakian League, most with Motor České Budějovice, although he was with HC Dukla Jihlava from 1980-82. After leaving Motor České in 1989, he then played for 13 more years of a very long career in various European leagues, mostly in Germany. These included Eintracht Frankfurt, Mannheimer ERC, Frankfurt Lions, EV Regensburg, Eisbären Regensburg, and ERC Selb in the German Leagues, but he also played for SC Bern and Grasshopper Club Zürich in the Swiss A League, and played the 1996-97 season with the Ayr Scottish Eagles in Scotland. Lála never played professionally in North America but was drafted in the 4th round by the Québec Nordiques in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft.
Lála was a forward who played for Czechoslovakia at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in 1984. He also was on the Canada Cup teams in 1981 and 1984. At the Worlds, Lála competed at the World Juniors in 1977, winning a bronze medal, and the World Championships in 1979, 1981-83, and 1985-86, winning a gold medal in 1985, silver medals in 1979, 1982-83, and a bronze medal in 1981.
