Biography

Germán Rieckehoff studied at the University of Minnesota and the University of Puerto Rico before becoming a lawyer in his native Puerto Rico. He also edited the sports journal El Campeon and was sports editor of La Democracia. Rieckehoff played multiple sports when young including baseball, basketball, tennis, athletics, and football.

In sports administration Rieckehoff headed numerous groups in his home country. He was the first President of the Football Federation of Puerto Rico in 1940, founded and was President of the Puerto Rico Equestrian Federation (1942), and President of the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation (1963), and founded Puerto Rico federations in hockey (field), rowing, and roller skating. He served as Vice-President (1967) and President (1977, 1981-90) of the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee. Rieckehoff was President of the Organizing Committee for the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, and was President of the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization from 1978-82.

Rieckehoff became an IOC Member in 1977 and served until his resignation in 1990, after which he was made an Honorary Member. He served on several IOC Commissions, as follows: Radio Commission (1983-84), Study and Evaluation Commission for the Preparation of the Olympic Games (1984-86), Eligibility Commission (1989-90), and Commission for the International Olympic Academy (1990).
