Puerto Rico first competed at the 1948 Olympics in London and has not failed to compete at the Olympic Games since then, notably attending the 1980 Olympics despite being a Commonwealth of the United States.
Puerto Rican athletes won their first six medals (one silver and five bronze) all in boxing. Through 2022, Puerto Rico has won 10 Olympic medals, with one gold won by Monica Puig in 2016 women’s tennis singles, and a second gold by Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at Tokyo 2020.
However, the best-known female Puerto Rican athlete may be tennis player Gigi Fernandez, who played for many years on the WTA Tour. Fernandez represented Puerto Rico at the 1984 Olympic Games in tennis, but later switched allegiance and won Olympic gold medals in women’s doubles at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, while playing alongside Mary Joe Fernandez (no relation) for the United States.
Puerto Rico has competed at the Olympic Winter Games consecutively from 1984 to 1998, and then again in 2018 and 2022, for seven appearances in all. In 2002, no Puerto Rican competed but they entered a bobsleigh team, which eventually withdrew, although they marched at the Opening Ceremony. Puerto Rico has had 21 Winter Olympians, 19 of them men, with Mary Pat Wilson and Kellie Delka the only women, competing in Alpine skiing in 1988 and skeleton in 2022, respectively. Puerto Ricans have competed in Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, freestyle skiing, luge, and skeleton.
No Puerto Rican has yet won a medal at the Winter Olympics. Perhaps their best result has been the participation of the 1994 four-men bobsleigh team, which finished 25th out of 30 teams.
In 1983 the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico was awarded with the Olympic Cup.
