Biography

In 1960 Ecuadorian tennis player Miguel Olvera became the first unseeded entry to win the singles at the Cincinnati Open. Throughout the 1960s Olvera represented his country in the Davis Cup where he recorded a famous victory against the renowned Arthur Ashe in 1967, who had never even lost a set in 10 prior Davis Cup matches. This victory helped Ecuador to beat the United States 3–2 in the inter-zonal final. One year later Olvera played in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics when tennis was a demonstration sport.
