The son of Mino Hofer, an all-round sportsman who was a good fencer and footballer, Max Hofer turned out to be a top Italian water skier in the 1970s. Max learned the sport on the waters overlooking the city of Arona and, at the age of 20, won the European tricks title on Lake Segrino, near the city of Canzo. Hofer made many international appearances for Italy and, despite the presence of Roby Zucchi at the same time, Max managed to stay at the top of the sport at home and abroad, and added to his European title by winning the silver medal behind the American Ricky McCormick in the jumping competition at the 1972 Olympics, where water skiing was a demonstration sport.
