The 1971 World Champion was Mike Suyderhoud, considered the greatest male skiier in the world in this era, but he was one of the few top skiiers not in München. The event was won by American Ricky McCormick who would win the Worlds in 1973 and 1975. The 1969 World Champion, Wayne Grimditch (USA), who won that title when he was only 14-years-old, competed in this event but struggled and finished last.
