Tennis player Tony Ortiz began playing the sport when he was seven-years-old and competed as a junior in both Puerto Rico and the United States. Ortiz excelled in both the singles and doubles, and was selected to represent Puerto Rico at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where tennis was played as a demonstration sport. In the singles at the Games, however, he lost in straight sets to Miguel Olvera of Ecuador. He had better success back home, becoming the national doubles champion twice with Tico Carrero, in addition to being a three-time runner-up in the singles. Ortiz later worked as a coach and was inducted into the Puerto Rican Tennis Hall of Fame in 2019.
