Anne Gardner-Nelson competed in the windsurfing demonstration at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, placing second. Gardner-Nelson won five world titles and 17 national and international titles. In 2006 she was named Yachtswoman of the Year by the Southern California Yachting Association.
Gardner-Nelson served as a navigator on the 1995 America3 all-women’s team in the America’s Cup trials. She later served as a television commentator for the 34th America’s Cup and Louis Vuitton Cup in San Francisco. Gardner-Nelson was a Renaissance woman who was described in one article about her as an “adventurer, entrepreneur, multi-engine pilot, scuba diver, sky diver, and hot air balloonist.”
