Austrian flatwater canoeist Hannelise Spitz placed sixth in the kayak singles at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. She had won a bronze medal at the Sprint World Championships the previous year. Nationally, she won nine Austrian titles in the kayak singles from 1961-69.
Spitz also was active in whitewater canoeing and won three gold medals (1969, 1971, 1973), one silver (1967), and one bronze (1965) in the non-Olympic Canadian doubles mixed event. By profession, she became a secretary in her father’s audit company.
