Biography
Austrian flatwater canoeist Karl Proisl won two medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, partnering Rupert Weinstabl in the Canadian doubles. The pair won the silver medal over 1,000 metres and the bronze medal in the marathon distance over 10,000 metres. After the Nazi German “Anschluss” of Austria both were forced to represent Germany at the 1938 World Championships, where they won the 1,000 metres gold medal and 10,000 silver. At the German nationals the duo won the 1,000 metres title from 1938-41 and the 10,000 title in 1938 and 1940-41. Proisl also won the Canadian singles titles from 1939-41 over 1,000 metres.
As a member of the Nazi police during World War II, Proisl was sentenced to death by a special court in Yugoslavia for war crimes and was executed at Beograd (Belgrade) in 1949.
